Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery

How Mako Technology works

Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology provides your surgeon with a personalised surgical plan optimised for your unique anatomy, and then ensures the surgeon executes the operation perfectly. First, a CT scan of the diseased joint is undertaken, which is uploaded into the Mako System software, where a 3D model of your hip or knee is created. This 3D model is used to pre-plan your operation and then assist your surgeon in performing your joint replacement.

The technology utilised has been partly in use for some years to allow planning prosthesis component replacement based purely on the anatomy present.  However, the MAKO technology now allows the surgeon to further refine the positioning of the components of your joint replacement based on your unique joint motion.

In the operating room, your surgeon takes your personalised surgical plan and moves your joint through a full range of motion all the while capturing more data regarding joint motion and tensions in the soft tissues such as ligaments. This allows the surgeon to take into account the complex interaction of the shapes of the joint surfaces on the bones and ligaments and adjust the position of the new joint accordingly. Having established what they consider the best position for the prosthesis the surgeon guides the robotic-arm within the predetermined areas of the joint where the machine only allows bone cutting where planned, and only in safe zones, to accept the new replacement in a perfectly placed position. In laboratory and clinical studies, Mako Technology demonstrated very accurate placement of implants, in the hip and knee, according to a pre-operative and intra-operative personalised surgical plan. This study also showed that Mako Total Knee replacement demonstrated soft tissue protection to the ligaments around the knee since much less retraction (pulling) on the soft tissues is needed to expose the joint to the surgeon, and the burr or saw on the robotic arm simply switches off if anywhere apart from the correct position- it cannot be used to cut in the wrong or a dangerous position.

We understand that making sure you know what to expect from your joint replacement experience is important to you. As you are reading through this material, if you have additional questions please reach out to us to discuss.

Each patient is unique, and can experience joint pain for different reasons. It’s important to talk to us about the reason for your knee pain so you can understand the treatment options available to you. Pain from arthritis and joint degeneration can be constant or come and go, occur with movement or after a period of rest, or be located in one spot or many parts of the body. It is common for patients to try medication and other conservative treatments to treat their knee pain. If you haven’t experienced adequate relief with those treatment options, you may be a candidate for Mako Partial Knee replacement, which may provide you with relief from your knee pain.
